After exploring numerous options, independent engineers have concluded that using a vacuum sewer to replace septic tanks on more than 20,000 houses will save the city more than $250 million out of a $1 billion dollar spend.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New sewer technology could save city $250M in septic tank phase out\" width=\"1180\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SrITulYSjjo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Some of Jacksonville\u2019s aging septic tanks \u2014 which have oftentimes been responsible for pollution runoff into Florida\u2019s waterways \u2014 may soon be replaced by a sewer system using new technology that would save the city hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>According to a new report from JEA, septic tank phaseout in 32 identified neighborhoods would have cost about $1 billion, but that number would drop to $743 million using <a href=\"https:\/\/flovac.es\/en\/news\/the-hidden-costs-of-gravity-sewers-vs-vacuum-sewers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vacuum sewer<\/a> technology.<\/p>\n<h4>Shallow excavation<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cOne of the key advantages of the vacuum sewer system is that it will be much less disruptive to residents during construction,\u201d said JEA spokesperson Karen McAllister. \u201cExcavation is shallow, where currently construction is in the middle of the road, and excavation can run from 3 to 20 feet deep.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5432\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5432\" class=\"wp-image-5432 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/flovac.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/unnamed-e1626281075406-600x554.jpg\" alt=\"Replacing septic tanks with vacuum sewers is the future of sanitation\" width=\"600\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flovac.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/unnamed-e1626281075406-600x554.jpg 600w, https:\/\/flovac.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/unnamed-e1626281075406-300x277.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flovac.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/unnamed-e1626281075406-768x709.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flovac.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/unnamed-e1626281075406.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CEO John Radinoff (left) with Manager of Operations Michael Pringle (right).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Using a vacuum station, vacuum mains and a valve pit, JEA would be able to pull sewage through the pipes until the treatment plant, rather than using a conventional gravity sewer that requires deep trenches and various pump stations so that the wastewater can flow.<\/p>\n<p>JEA is the utility in Jacksonville that looks after electricity, water and sewer. Over the past couple of years they have run an innovation lab that identified products that would improve their systems and shape the future of what the industry should look like.
