Flovac: The Resilience of the Project in Canouan After Hurricane Beryl

Flovac Installation Withstands Hurricane Beryl

The Caribbean is known not only for its crystal-clear waters and stunning landscapes but also for being a region prone to extreme weather events, such as hurricanes. This past July, Hurricane Beryl, a category 5 storm, hit Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, significantly impacting the island of Canouan. However, despite the destructive force of the storm, the vacuum sewer system installed by  Flovac at the Sandy Lane Yacht Club & Residences has proven its resilience and reliability.

Flovac Proyect in Sandy Lane Yacht Club

Flovac Installed Its System in 2018 at Sandy Lane Yacht Club

Flovac installed its system in 2016 at the Sandy Lane Yacht Club, located in the exclusive marina of Canouan, a luxury port that has transformed this small Caribbean island into the central hub for megayachts in the Grenadines. With a total of 120 berths, 24 of which are dedicated to megayachts up to 100 meters long, the complex also houses a commercial area, hotels, and a luxurious residential villa zone.

In 2018, Flovac completed the installation of an innovative vacuum sewer system at this prestigious complex. The project, which took two years to complete, included:

  • A 2.5-kilometer sewer network.
  • A vacuum station.
  • A reclaimed water treatment plant.

The installation was designed to handle the complex conditions of the island, which measures only 5 kilometers and relies entirely on desalination for its water supply. Thanks to the reclaimed water treatment plant, a sustainable approach was achieved, vital for both the development of the complex and the preservation of Canouan’s fragile natural environment.

Innovation and Technology: Flovactronic and BMS

Flovac integrated its Flovactronic system into the Building Management System (BMS) installed at Sandy Lane Yacht Club, enabling real-time comprehensive control of the sewer network and other facilities of the complex. This advanced technology not only facilitates continuous monitoring but also allows for quick response to potential incidents. Additionally, the system is equipped with backup units for emergencies, further increasing the safety and reliability of the system.

The Challenge of Hurricane Beryl

In July of this year, Hurricane Beryl, a category 5 storm, brought devastating winds and torrential rains. Canouan, being a small and exposed island, suffered the direct impact of the storm. However, thanks to the quality of Flovac’s installation, the vacuum sewer system at Sandy Lane Yacht Club withstood the hurricane remarkably well. Although some minor repairs will be needed, the system demonstrated its resilience, continuing to function effectively even in such extreme conditions.

Resilience and Commitment to Sustainability

This event highlights the importance of having robust and reliable infrastructure in vulnerable environments. Flovac’s vacuum sewer system, along with the reclaimed water treatment plant, not only contributes to Canouan’s sustainability but also stands as a testament to Flovac’s quality and commitment to its clients.

The integration of cutting-edge technology, such as Flovactronic, along with a clear focus on sustainability, has enabled Canouan to face unprecedented climate challenges. Flovac continues to prove that its solutions are not only innovative and efficient but also capable of withstanding the forces of nature, ensuring reliable and long-lasting service.
